Some call it the Garden City of India. Others call it our Silicon Valley. Any way you slice it, Bangalore is a great place to be – especially if, like us, you get to work on complex engineering challenges and build products for users around the world.
Our engineers have worked on core Google products like Ads, Apps, Chrome, Enterprise, Geo, News and Search. We’ve launched Google Finance, Map Maker and SMS Channels, and do important back-end work for AdWords. We’re also developing key components of next-generation search infrastructure and products for users in markets with underdeveloped digital infrastructure.
We’re small enough to be genuinely close-knit and friendly, but get to work with Googlers around the world every day. We’re encouraged to innovate and solve problems proactively. Our office has an awesome cafeteria, a gym, a nap room, and we enjoy door-to-door cab service and an on-call doctor.
We also have lots of fun. We play pool, and foosball, and cricket, and chess. We go on off-sites to destinations like Goa, Leh and the Maldives. From Deepavali to Karaga Shaktyotsava, we celebrate a different Indian festival in the office almost every month. We also celebrate non-Indian holidays, like Halloween and Christmas.

Our engineers are experts in C and C++, Java, AJAX and HTML, and work on complex projects involving distributed systems, scalable infrastructure and mobile applications. Our largest teams work on Chrome and Apps. We have a significant Geo team (we built Map Maker, now used in 188 countries), and also have teams working on Search performance, the back end of Ads products, News quality and products for emerging markets. Contrary to what some might think, our work is not local in scope or focus – it’s core to what Google does and affects hundreds of millions of users around the world.
We’re primarily an engineering office, though we do have a few other roles here as well. Our location makes us pretty special, too. Bangalore’s a wonderful city, with great weather, outstanding restaurants and lots and lots of open space, from Cubbon Park to Lal Bagh. (Thus the “Garden City” nickname.) Plus, we’re just a short flight from cool travel destinations from Bangkok to Mauritius. We may be biased, but we think this is the best place to live and work in all of India.
We sponsor and participate in academic and industry conferences, like Barcamp, Open Source India, HiPC, the India Software Developer Conference and the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. We have close relationships with local engineering and business schools, like the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management. We host Developer Days in our office. And we connect with technology entrepreneurs by speaking at TiE and Plugged.in events.
We’ve hosted famous folks like politician Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan, novelist Chetan Bhagat, aviation industry pioneer Captain G.R. Gopinath, quiz-show host and TV producer Siddhartha Basu, IT business guru M.S. Krishnan and social entrepreneur Ramesh Ramanathan.
A lot of us get involved through GoogleServe, a day where Googlers throughout the company can volunteer during their work day. For instance, our Googlers volunteered at the Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, home to 150 disadvantaged and disabled children, where we drew, painted, played games and held a talent show. We also donated school supplies and fed the children lunch. And we took 25 children from the Freedom Foundation, an orphanage, to Wonderla, a local amusement park, and made the Foundation a donation of supplies and school uniforms.
One of the founders of Google Bangalore, Lalitesh Katragadda, created Map Maker and is known for his geo-data, machine vision, machine learning and space robotics work. He’s also spoken at TED.
