We're constantly refining our signature search engine to provide better results, and developing offerings like Google Instant, Google Voice Search and Google Image Search to make it faster and more engaging. We're providing users around the world with great search results every day, but at Google, great just isn't good enough. We're just getting started.

The role: Program Manager, Access

Google's projects, like our users, span the globe and require managers to keep the big picture in focus. As a Program Manager at Google, you lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects. You plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating goals to project stakeholders. Your projects often span offices, time zones and hemispheres, and it's your job to keep all the players coordinated on the project's progress and deadlines.

The Emerging Market's Access team has one mission - to remove road-blocks which prevent people from accessing the internet within emerging markets. The team leads drive and manage the entire effort within a region or large country. They provide matrix and technical leadership to drive projects. This requires them to work with policy makers, network engineering, big and small enterprises, universities and all major players in a country's internet eco-system. They prioritize, collect and evaluate data, drive complex projects to completion and understand complex topics that affect Google experience. Our projects range from providing bandwidth to the top 10% of universities, to laying fiber, to making key investments, to cleaning up internet exchanges, to placing caches in key locations where Google would normally not, and much more. What we don't do is think small. We don't wire up a village or two. We think at scale and try to have a big impact. Identifying the symptom is easy (the internet is slow), but finding the real problem and designing a scalable solutions is hard. As a member of the Emerging Markets Access Team, you will be responsible for defining and implementing projects that foster Google's broader goals of open, low-cost, fast and ubiquitous wired and wireless access to the Internet. The Access Team’s GASP Program attempts to ensuring that Universities within Emerging Markets have a strong internet experience. This means working with Universities to ensure that they have reasonable connectivity and throughput. It also means deployment of Google Apps and other services which create a rich internet eco-system. The role involves both selection, coordination, and execution of access related initiatives based on a deep understanding of the access industry eco-system, access technologies, and Google's business needs. You will leverage strong technical and analytical skills to develop strategic insights, evaluate new opportunities, and develop actionable plans. You will work cross functionally within Google and with external government and commercial partners, coordinating with policy, product and other groups to drive execution of access initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop insightful recommendations on strategic direction and specific project opportunities that can move the needle in the access space
  • Perform analysis and research, of technical and business issues associated with potential product ideas or strategic investments
  • Incubate projects. Find creative ways to structure and launch projects and leverage resources most effectively to have massive impact
  • Build compelling case for projects that will motivate executives. Advocate/ champion projects with executives
  • Drive project execution. Ensure mature projects are well organized, staffed and delivering on. Identify/evaluate opportunities.

Minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Network Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering (In lieu of degree, 4 years relevant work experience).
  • 3 years experience in wireless or wireline communication, either as a vendor, operator or consultant

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to structure ambiguous problems, work independently and focus on the end product/results
  • Current on wireless/wireline telecommunications technology and industry/public policy
  • Proven track record of entrepreneurial activity in creating and scaling projects.
