Lesson 7a: Time-savers

Find and Edit

Objective: AdWords offers a variety of tools to help you quickly manage and modify your campaigns. Use our time-saving tools to make changes to ads, keywords, and maximum cost-per-click bids (Max CPCs) across your entire account, or simply take advantage of their search capabilities to find exactly what you're looking for. These tools are especially beneficial for advertisers with numerous campaigns, ads, and/or keywords to manage.

Ad Text

About the Tool

Use the 'Find and Edit Ad Text Tool' to easily locate and edit ads across your entire account. Search for all ads meeting specific criteria, and, if you'd like, edit them all at once. You can also use this tool to easily edit the destination URLs for your ads.

Using the Tool

To access and use the Find and Edit Ad Text tool, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your AdWords account at adwords.google.com
  2. Click the Tools link on the Campaign Management tab.
  3. Click Advanced Search and Editing, and then click Find and Edit Ad Text.
  4. Step 1: Enter specific criteria about the ads you'd like to find and edit, if you want to narrow your search. This step is optional.
  5. Step 2: Enter the changes you'd like to make to your ads. If you don't want to make changes, select No changes. Just show me my ads.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. To apply changes to every ad that matches your search criteria, check the box next to Accept All. If you'd like to accept changes on an individual basis, check Apply next to the text ad.
  8. Click Continue.
  9. Click Save Changes.
Keep in mind that when you make changes with the Find and Edit Ad Text tool, the AdWords system will delete your old ad and create a new one. Your new ad won't retain the history of the old ad, and the new ad won't appear on the Google Network until it passes an editorial review.

Keywords

About the Tool

You can use this tool to easily locate and edit keywords throughout your entire account. Search for all keywords meeting specific criteria, and, if you'd like, edit them all at once.

Using the Tool

To access the Find and Edit Keywords tool, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your AdWords account at adwords.google.com
  2. Click the Tools link on your Campaign Management tab.
  3. Click Advanced Search and Editing, and then click Find and Edit Keywords.
  4. Step 1: Enter specific criteria about the keywords you'd like to find and edit, if you want to narrow your search. This step is optional.
  5. Step 2: Enter the changes you'd like to make to your ads. If you're just searching for keywords, select No changes right now. See results list.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. To make changes to every keyword that matches your search criteria, check the box next to Apply All. If you'd like to accept changes on an individual basis, check Apply next to the keyword.
  8. Click Continue.
  9. Click Save Changes.
When you edit your keywords, the AdWords system considers the edited words as new keywords. This means that your keywords' histories won't be retained once you make changes.

Maximum CPCs

About the Tool

Use the 'Find and Edit Max CPCs Tool' to easily locate keywords and edit Max CPCs throughout your entire account. Search for all keywords meeting specific criteria, and, if you'd like, change all of their CPCs with just a few clicks. You can increase or decrease CPCs by percentage or value, or you can remove keyword-level CPCs altogether.

Using the Tool

To access and use the Find and Edit Max CPCs tool, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your AdWords account at adwords.google.com
  2. Click the Tools link on the Campaign Management tab.
  3. Click Advanced Search and Editing, and then click Find and Edit Max CPCs.
  4. Step 1: Select the type of Max CPC to find and/or change. You can find and change Max CPCs at the keyword or campaign level.
  5. Step 2: Enter specific criteria if you'd like to narrow your search. This step is optional.
  6. Step 3: Enter the amount by which you'd like to change your Max CPCs, or choose to remove keyword-level Max CPCs and default to ad group Max CPCs. (Keyword level Max CPCs override the ad group CPC setting; removing them will revert to the original ad group CPC.) You can also select No changes. Just show me my keywords and CPCs if you'd like to simply perform a search.
  7. Click Continue.
  8. Check the box next to each change you'd like to make, and uncheck the box next to any keywords you'd like to leave unchanged.
  9. Click Continue.
  10. Click Save Changes.
Once you save your changes, your new Max CPCs will be effective immediately.

Campaign Negatives

About the Tool

Negative keywords prevent your ads from appearing whenever a user includes a certain term in his or her search query. The Edit Campaign Negative Keywords tool lets you add those negative keywords to any campaign. For example, if you're advertising your bookstore, but you don't sell textbooks, you might want to add the negative keyword "-textbooks" to your campaign. This will stop your ad from appearing alongside searches like "textbooks" or "used school textbooks."

Using the Tool

To access and use the Edit Campaign Negative Keywords tool:

  1. Log in to your AdWords account at adwords.google.com
  2. Click the Tools link on your Campaign Management tab.
  3. Click Edit Campaign Negative Keywords.
  4. Select the campaign you'd like to edit from the drop-down menu, and click Go.
  5. Enter your negative keywords in the 'Enter words manually...' field, and click Add Keywords.
    • If your negative keywords appear in more than one ad group, use Clean Sweep to remove them from the ad group level and add them at the campaign level. Use the drop-down menu in step one to select the location of the negative keywords, and click 'Run Clean Sweep.'
If you need help identifying appropriate negative keywords, visit the Keyword Tool. This tool displays lists of keywords that may trigger your ad. If any of the keywords suggested by the Keyword Tool don't relate directly to your ad group, adding them as negative keywords will help you better reach your target audience.
