MedAfrica
is a mobile application that provides a suite of health information services including:
- First aid instructions
- Directories of doctors and hospitals relevant to the current location of the user
- Symptom checkers
- Alert services
with the goal of making health services and information easily available to all.
Who
Shimba Technologies Limited is a company based
in Kenya that provides channel development, information dissemination, and transaction
processing solutions. They specialize in the development of custom corporate mobile solutions
as well as products for the mass market.
How
MedAfrica was built on top of the Android platform. Combining location data from a database
provided by health care providers with the Google Maps API makes it possible to show users
nearby hospitals.
Impact
MedAfrica was awarded the first prize in the Company Category of 2012
Ericsson Application Awards. The team aims to make the application the number one app
when it comes to healthcare in Africa.
