How do I apply?

We do not have a physical application form. To complete your application, you will be asked to fill out an online form. You will also be asked to submit electronic versions of your CV, essay responses, transcripts, and recommendation letters. Please scan your transcripts, enrollment confirmation, and signed recommendation letters into electronic format (PDF format preferred).

Is it mandatory that I fill out the online application form?

Yes. Your application packet will not be complete until you submit the completed online form. This information will be our main resource for providing updates on your application status.

Can international students apply for the scholarship?

Yes. If you are currently studying in Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa and meet our criteria for scholarship eligibility, you can apply regardless of your citizenship.

What countries are eligible for the scholarship?

Do I need to send an official copy of transcripts?

If you cannot obtain an official transcript from your University before the deadline, you can send an unofficial transcript. However, we will require all finalists to provide an official transcript.

What characterises an official copy of transcripts?

Official transcripts are documents that are authorised and issued by your University and demonstrate your academic performance. The official transcript should include an account of your grades and an explanation of the grading scale at your University.

How can I provide an English translation of my transcripts when my University does not issue English transcripts?

Upload the original, non-English transcripts as well as your English translation of your transcripts. Please have your translation confirmed by an official authority of the university such as the Dean or Provost.

How should I respond to the essay questions?

You can treat the essays as short research or technical reports / papers. Feel free to use tables, references, or figures. Please do not make the essays too wordy!

What does “students must be entering her final year of a Bachelor’s degree, or enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme (or equivalent) in 2009/2010” mean?

This means that you must be enrolled in the next academic year. If you graduate before December 2009, you are not eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship is dedicated to provide financial support for the next academic year.

What type of leadership activities shall I include on my CV?

Please list any examples of leadership within your wider technology community. This might include teaching, tutoring, lecturing, mentoring, organising summits, conferences or workshops, supporting women or girls in the field, introducing new ideas to do with women in Computer Science or others. We are less concerned with official job titles such as “leader” or “manager” and more with differences you have made to others’ lives.

Do I need to submit the recommendation letters with the rest of my application?

Yes. All application files should be submitted in electronic format through the online application form. Letters should be signed and then scanned.

Can I send my application packet by regular mail?

No, all supporting documents will be submitted in electronic format through the online application form.

Which format should I use to submit my documents in?

All applications should be submitted in .pdf, Google Docs or .doc format. We are unable to accept applications which are not submitted in these formats

How can I demonstrate an excellent academic record, if a First Class Honours degree or a ranking system does not exist at my University?

We are aware that in some countries an excellent academic record is difficult to prove. We are looking for applicants who have an outstanding academic performance within their University.

A Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree does not exist in my country; how do I complete the form?

We are aware that some countries do not offer a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree (e.g. “Civilingenjör Datateknik” in Sweden, “Diplomstudiengang Informatik” in Germany, etc.). When completing the online application form, please select the degree which most closely mirrors your level.

How will I know if my application has been received?

We will send you an email notification within ten days of the submission deadline.

Can men apply?

No. This scholarship is dedicated to supporting women in technology. We hope to expand our scholarship programme in the future.

How do I apply for an internship?

The online application form includes a check box to indicate if you are interested in internship opportunities. If you check this box, a Google representative will contact you via email separate from the scholarship to follow up. Please be assured that the selection process for Anita Borg will be totally separate from any internship or full-time selection.

Can finalists reapply?

Yes, finalists can reapply. Scholarship recipients are not eligible to reapply.
