IMAGINE a graduate assistantship in voice where your duties are to perform as well and as often as you can... introducing the Hayes Young Vocal Artists Graduate Program. An unique program combining practical study, an academic track, and professional experience leading to a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance, it will begin in Fall, 2007, and is supported by generous assistance from both Mariam Cannon Hayes and the Hayes School of Music of Appalachian State University.
Schubertiad in Baden bei Wien.
The program is designed for young singers who will have earned an undergraduate degree in music from a college music department, a music conservatory or a school of music prior to admission, and who intend to major in vocal performance at the Hayes School of Music. Young Vocal Artists will be selected on the basis of talent, ambition, and motivation necessary to pursue a performing career. Four will be chosen - a vocal quartet consisting of soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists - with one Young Vocal Artist of each voice type enrolled in the program in any given year.
Each Young Vocal Artist will be awarded a special graduate vocal assistantship that will allow them to focus on gaining extensive performance experience in a variety of venues, both on the campus of Appalachian State University, and, in nearby Blowing Rock, on the stage of the Hayes Performing Arts Center, a new facility specially designed for performances of opera and musical theater. Other performance opportunities will occur at venues throughout North Carolina. Young Vocal Artists will also benefit from an academic track that includes weekly vocal and dramatic coaching with School of Music voice faculty and distinguished visiting artists, as well as instruction in foreign languages and practical advice regarding professional career development.
Hayes Young Vocal Artist graduate assistantships for Master of Music in Vocal Performance candidates have a value of $7000 per academic year (at the current in-state rate, in effect, covering the cost of tuition and fees, and providing a living stipend of approximately $4787). Further, upon completion of the first year of study, Young Vocal Artists will be offered the opportunity to attend the Franz Schubert Institut in Baden bei Wien, Austria, for a five-week summer course on the Poetry and Performance of the German Lied. The costs of summer study will be subsidized by the generous endowment of Mariam Cannon Hayes and the Hayes School of Music.
