Dean's Seminar: “Is Excessive Weight Loss Good for You?”

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Seminar Series presents “Is Excessive Weight Loss Good for You?”

Obesity leads to major disease and early death. While modest weight reduction is encouraged for obese patients, excessive weight loss may be dangerous. Pfizer Visiting Professor, Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, MD, MPH, will discuss the benefits of focusing weight-loss efforts on the overall health status of patients rather than the number of pounds lost.

Dr. Pi-Sunyer is Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology Diabetes and Nutrition at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York, and Director of the New York Obesity Research Center. His presentation is made possible by the 2010 Pfizer Visiting Professorship in Diabetes, which was awarded to the Department of Biology. The program allows US healthcare institutions the opportunity to host a recognized expert of their choice for 3 days of educational exchange.
