Starhawk on “Earth Activist Training”

Start with permaculture as the foundation. "Permaculture" is regenerative
design: a set of ethics, principles, and practices that create beneficial
relationships and whole systems. Permacuture meets human needs sustainably
and heals damaged natural systems. Permaculture works with nature, or
rather, teaches us to "work as nature working." Extend the principles and
insights of permaculture into progressive political organizing, and explore
strategies for change. Weave in threads of Earth-based spirituality,
inclusive and non-dogmatic, to connect heart and soul to the work. Add
nature awareness as the touchstone. This is Earth Activist Training, a rich
array of solutions, tools, and strategies to redesign our world. Immerse
yourself in this richness through classroom theory, hands-on practice, inner
experience, and community. Don't forget that it's damn fun, too. Many find
it life changing.

The 2-week, residential EAT First courses include a rigorous 72-hour
permaculture design course—participants receive a certificate on completion.

Starhawk is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes,
and is deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of
spirituality to political activism. Together with Penny Livingston-Stark and
Erik Ohlsen, she coteaches EAT, Earth Activist Trainings, intensive seminars
that combine permaculture design, political organizing, and earth-based
spirituality (www.earthactivisttraining.org

http://groups.google.com/group/burn-green/

This group is an ACTION-oriented group focused on developing innovative,
creative, out-of-the-box solutions to sustainability "problems" in the areas
of energy/power/renewables, recycling/composting/gray water, carbon
mitigation, food security, transportation, land use, environmental
education.

The members are representatives of city/county governments,
sustainability/environmental/technology development businesses and
nonprofits, funders with deep pockets, as well as artists, designers,
inventors, engineers, mechanics.
The idea is to connect the ingenuity, out-of-the-box design strategies and
the humor and engaged nature of artists and activists to those forging the
arena of sustainability problem solving.

The ethos is based in open hand, open source, cooperative development of
projects that address immediate, localized sustainability issues.

This is a participant-driven group, which meets once a month in the SF Bay
Area, providing 2 presentations on innovative projects, discussion of what
is needed and how to accomplish, specific project development, and open
networking.
The goal, beyond information sharing, is to identify specific sustainability
needs/issues and develop specific solutions that are innovative and fun, as
well as to access available funding for project development and
implementation.

Film I THIRST

When: Wed Jun 10, 2009 7:30pm to 9:30pm

How to design & build a big system from a little house

“When the well is dry, we learn the worth of water” – Ben Franklin

The dry months of summer are here, marking the right time to build and prepare for next season’s rains. Rainwater harvesting is the practice of capturing storm-water runoff from a building’s roof and conveying it to a storage tank for irrigation, indoor plumbing uses or other water resource purposes. Although the Bay Area averages between 20-26 inches of precipitation a year, rainwater catchment is a key strategy for drought adaptation and alternative water supplies.

On Saturday, June 27th , Ingrid Severson and DIG Cooperative will collectively lead a full day rainwater harvesting workshop at a homestead and collective residence in El Sobrante (East Bay, about 10 minutes east of Berkeley). The class will start with a rainwater catchment system lecture and overview, and follow with a hands-on installation and connection of five 550 gallon tanks. In this hands-on full day workshop, participants will gain practical understanding of system design and sizing, tank types, pricing, sourcing, installation practices and more. Further information is listed below.

Where: El Sobrante, CA
When: Saturday June 27th from : 9:30am – 5pm
Cost: $50-75, sliding scale. There are several work exchange positions open for those who are interested – please email for details.
Bring:
Note pad and pen, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, comfortable shoes and clothes to work in.

Other Essential Information:
Workshop will involve pipe fitting and gluing, some digging and working with various tools. Please come prepared to engage with a hands-on workshop!

•	Workshop will include course materials, vegetarian lunch and refreshments
•	Pre-registration is required
•	Carpooling is encouraged and can be facilitated if indicated in registration

Please contact Ingrid Severson for registration or any questions you may have:
ingrid_severson@yahoo.com

About the instructor:
Ingrid Severson is a Bay Area native and co-founder of Bay Localize where she served for three years as a Project Organizer and Steering Committee Member. Ingrid initiated the Rooftop Resources Project, a Bay Localize program that supports the advancement of rainwater catchment, solar power, living roofs and edible roof gardens. She gained experience in the environmental field through undergraduate studies at San Francisco State and New College of California. She pursued a hands-on approach to Deep Ecology with extensive travels and environmental programs in Latin America and is proficient in written and spoken Spanish. She has led multiple design and installation workshops in the Bay Area region and is a certified Permaculture Designer, and an ARCSA Accredited Professional.

Villa Sobrante is a 1/3 acre homestead in unincorporated West Contra Costa County, created with the intention of cultivating regenerative systems and community in an urban environment. www.villasobrante.blogspot.com
Event Description: Our June planning and discussion meeting will take place the evening of June 9. Please come and report on or listen to recent permaculture-related activities and learnings.

David and Joanne were bicycling in the Netherlands during the first half of May and would be glad to report on the state of food production in that part of the world. They also have a DVD to share on the subject of alcohol as fuel and how to make it CHEAPLY It's called, "Alcohol Can Be a Gas! Perhaps we should consider hosting a permaculture film series.

I will report on a weekend visit to the Mendocino Ecological Learning Center, MELC, a permaculture model and training center in Willits.

Perhaps Debbie, Christina, or Ellen will report on recent water catchment installations.

And I hope that some recent graduates (or members) of the permaculture class at Merritt will attend and fill us in on their activities and recent developments on the campus landscape.

We will start planning our July Garden Wheel. Will it be a bike tour?

The meeting will be at my house, 447 36th Street, in the southern part of north Oakland between Telegraph and Webster. See directions below. We will circle and start check-ins at 7 pm. A light potluck will begin at 6:00 pm.

Directions
This block of 36th Street ends at Telegraph in the CA Highway Patrol office and at Webster in Mosswood Park. It can only be accessed via either of those streets.

The house is on the south side of the street 1/3 block from Mosswood Park. It's a 2-story beige house with dark brown trim. The numbers hang in front of the window on the front porch. It is a few blocks south of the MacArthur BART station.

It's OK to bring bikes inside.

Call or e-mail me if you need directions from a freeway or if you have any other questions.

Apologies to those who receive this message twice.

About the Burn Green Soiree:
http://groups.google.com/group/burn-green/

This group is an ACTION-oriented group focused on developing innovative, creative, out-of-the-box solutions to sustainability "problems" in the areas of energy/power/renewables, recycling/composting/gray water, carbon mitigation, food security, transportation, land use, environmental education.

The members are representatives of city/county governments, sustainability/environmental/technology development businesses and nonprofits, funders with deep pockets, as well as artists, designers, inventors, engineers, mechanics. The idea is to connect the ingenuity, out-of-the-box design strategies and the humor and engaged nature of artists and activists to those forging the arena of sustainability problem solving.

The ethos is based in open hand, open source, cooperative development of projects that address immediate, localized sustainability issues.

This is a participant-driven group, which meets once a month in the SF Bay Area, providing 2 presentations on innovative projects, discussion of what is needed and how to accomplish, specific project development, and open networking. The goal, beyond information sharing, is to identify specific sustainability needs/issues and develop specific solutions that are innovative and fun, as well as to access available funding for project development and implementation.
Event Description: NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Governor’s 20X2020 Agency Team on Water
Conservation (20X2020 Agency Team) is holding a workshop to receive public comment on the
final draft statewide implementation plan for urban water conservation.
BACKGROUND
In February 2008 Governor Schwarzenegger called for a 20 percent reduction in per-capita
water use by 2020 and asked state agencies to develop a more aggressive plan of conservation
to achieve the goal. A team of state and federal agencies (20X2020 Agency Team) was formed
consisting of the Department of Water Resources, the State Water Resources Control Board,
the California Energy Commission, the Public Utilities Commission, the Department of Public
Health, the Air Resources Board, the CALFED Program, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation
with technical assistance from the California Urban Water Conservation Council. The 20x2020
Agency Team was formed to develop a statewide implementation plan for achieving this goal.
The 20x2020 Agency Team has prepared a draft of its final report entitled “20x2020 Water
Conservation Plan.” The draft report includes urban water use data for a selected baseline
year, water conservation targets for year 2020, a strategy with multiple actions for achieving
those targets, and an implementation plan.
During development of the plan the Agency Team developed research papers (Technical
Memoranda). Two public workshops and a conference call were held to receive input based on
the Technical Memoranda. Written comments were also received. Refer to Document
Availability below to see the Technical Memoranda and public comments received.
MEETING PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this workshop is to solicit public input on the draft of the final report, entitled
“20x2020 Water Conservation Plan.” This will be the final workshop to solicit comments on the
conservation plan.

"Ground Water Depletion: A National Assessment and Global Perspective"

Abstract: Development of ground-water resources for agricultural, industrial, and municipal purposes greatly expanded during the 20th century, and economic gains from ground-water use have been dramatic. In many places, however, ground-water reserves have been depleted to the extent that well yields have decreased, pumping costs have increased, water quality has deteriorated, aquatic ecosystems have been damaged by reduced ground-water discharge, and land has irreversibly subsided. Some causes and effects of groundwater depletion, however, are neither obvious nor easy to assess. A surprisingly large fraction of ground water pumped from confined aquifers derives from storage losses in adjacent confining layers, but depletion in low-permeability layers is difficult to estimate, rarely monitored, and too often overlooked. A new simplified method for estimating depletion from confining layers was developed, tested, and applied. Results indicate that depletion of storage in confining layers can greatly exceed the depletion from the confined aquifer itself. A nationwide assessment indicates that more than 700 km3 of water was depleted from ground-water systems in the U.S. in the past 100 years. Worldwide, the magnitude of ground-water depletion from storage may already be large enough to constitute a small but measurable contribution to sea-level rise during the 20th century.

Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse: A New Component of Stormwater Permitting

When: Fri May 15, 2009 9am to 3:30pm
Event Description:
For the first time, CASQA will devote an entire quarterly meeting to exploring stormwater harvesting and reuse. The subject matter is extremely timely for those involved with both water supply and stormwater management given the ongoing drought conditions affecting much of the western U.S. It is also an important emerging issue in stormwater permits as current tentative orders are starting to prioritize stormwater harvesting and reuse, along with infiltration, as preferred strategies of Low Impact Development.

The agenda for the meeting brings together a diverse range of experts that will help shape our understanding this important topic including:
An overview of policy and integration issues from a water supply, sanitary sewer and stormwater perspective
An exploration of regulatory barriers and solutions – for example: Are there water rights issues? Can stormwater be used within buildings for non-potable uses? What are the public health issues?
A review of case studies where stormwater has been successfully harvested and reused at a facility and a regional scale.
The agenda is available by clicking here ; registration to attend the meeting and watch the webcast is open – click here to register .
ATTEND IN PERSON: Register online until 5:00 pm, May 14th. Meeting fee payable at the door beginning at 8:00 a.m. - Check preferred, no credit cards at the door.

Speaker Details:
Bay Area pioneer in rainwater harvesting professional, John Russell, of Watersprout ( http://watersprout.org/home.html) will share his experience with designing, permitting and installing rainwater systems in the Bay Area. Come hear about:
350 gal rainwater harvesting system for toilets and clothes washer in the East Bay
10,000 gal system for irrigation on the Peninsula.
1,100 gal system in SF for toilets and irrigation
AND

Until recently, urban areas served by municipal water have tended to overlook rainwater as a water resource. San Francisco would like to change that by raising awareness about rainwater harvesting and promoting its use. As far as we know, San Francisco is the first city in California to formally adopt rainwater harvesting rules. Sarah Minick, the force behind the SF rainwater rules (together with Rosey Jencks) will discuss the rainwater rules and how you can contribute to realizing the vision of SF as the US’s urban rainwater mecca.

See you next Monday!

Here's the teaser: the subject of this work is personal and dirty - come see for yourself what that means! 20 of the artists at Cubberley will have their studios open so there's lots to see (sculpture, painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media, installation art and more) and some of us will be demonstrating our artmaking processes.

Here's a map to the location and the artist studios are in wings E, F and U (my studio is F-2); parking is plentiful in the large parking lots.

If you'd like to familiarize yourself with the other artists at Cubberley, you can view the Cubberley Studios website . I'll have a few map guides available at my studio for all of the other open studios in Silicon Valley and you can also pick one up at one of the locations listed here . You can browse the participating artists and learn more about open studios on the Silicon Valley Open Studios website .

Open Studios can be a fun way to spend some time with family and friends. And if you need some sustenance, there's good food and the best ice cream right next to Cubberley: have lunch at the tasty Burmese/Chinese Restaurant, Green Elephant Gourmet or Mountain Mike's Pizza.
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Did you know that along with acorns, wild flower seeds were one of the staples of the native diet in this area?
This is the time to go enjoy those flowers and their seeds before they are suddenly gone with the dry weather. Come take a Sunday hike in beautiful Cascade Canyon, learning about edible grasses, flowers, seeds and the history of foraging them as we go.

Please join me for my monthly Walk on the Wildside:
