Betty Freeman had made (since 1961) 432 grants and commissions to 81 composers, often early in their careers.The composers she assisted included Lou Harrison, John Cage, La Monte Young, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams, and many others. Cage dedicated his Freeman Etudes to her. Lou Harrison dedicated his Serenade for Betty Freeman and Franco Assetto to her and her husband, Steve Reich dedicated Variations for Winds, Strings, and Keyboards (1979) and Vermont Counterpoint (1982) to her, and John Adams's opera Nixon in China (1985-87) was dedicated to her. The American gamelan Si Betty, built by Harrison and William Colvig in 1979, was named for her. Following the premiere of Darda in 2009, the piece has been performed in Tokyo, New York, Berkeley and Los Angeles. In this new version Stone has adapted the work for the amazing 36 channel sound system of Super Deluxe and will feature Ms Sakurai's live vocals along with contributions from cellist Hiromichi Sakamoto and bassist Pearl Alexander. Stone thinks of this new version as a digital prayer for the victims of the Great Earthquake of Japan 2011, and proceeds from the concert will go to benefit those victims and their families. In the first half of the concert composer Christophe Charles also joins Carl Stone for a laptop duet, a first time collaboration between two pioneers of computer music.
