DESCRIPTION:Regulators in Europe\, North America and elsewhere have high ho
pes for new technical standards to protect user privacy. Online advertisers
have agreed to respect a "do not track" setting in Web browsers\, while th
e EU's proposed Data Protection Regulation would allow the European Commiss
ion to set standards requiring companies to take account of "developments i
n technology and solutions for privacy by design and data protection by def
ault."\n \nIs this approach likely to be effective? How can efficient and e
nforceable standards and rules be set\, without stifling online innovation?
What lessons can be learnt from previous efforts such as the Platform for
Privacy Preferences (P3P)?\n \nPlease join our panel of distinguished inter
national speakers to discuss these key questions for the Internet economy o
f the next decade.\n \nLunchtime lecture: Prof Joanna Kuleszca (University

DESCRIPTION:Third International Workshop on Security and Privacy in Social
Networks 2012 (SPSN-2012) in conjunction with IEEE SocialCom 2012\, Amsterd
 am\, The Netherlands\, September 3-6\, 2012\nhttp://spsn12.media.mit.edu/in
dex.html\n\nScope of Workshop:\n\nThe workshop aims to bring to the forefro
nt innovative approaches for analyzing and enhancing the security and priva
cy dimensions in online social networks. In order to facilitate the transit
ion of such methods from theory to mechanisms designed and deployed in exis
ting online social networking services\, we need to create a common languag
e between the researchers and practitioners of this new area\, spanning fro
m the theory of computational social sciences to conventional security and
network engineering.\n\nObjectives:\n\nThe guiding goal of the workshop is
to bring together researchers and practitioners who deal with the design an
d analysis of online social networking side by side with those who design s
ecurity and privacy protocols\, in order to:\n\n1. Survey and discuss
the current state of research that deals with security and privacy in socia
l networks.\n2. Create a community of researchers and practitioners wh
o are interested in enabling current social networks to incorporate dedicat
ed security methods.\n3. Create new opportunities and set the ground f
or future collaboration between participants\, generating insights that can
be carried forward into future work.\n4. Foster creativity and imagin
e the underlying technological changes in the way we network and communicat
e that will take place over the next 5-10 years.\n

DESCRIPTION:The rapid evolution of Internet applications is causing major c
hanges in carriers' business and network management. To support such demand
s (e.g. gaming\, teleconference)\, telco operators have moved their busines
s strategy to provide more application and services to both end-users and b
usiness customers. This strategy changes\, strengthened by other contradict
ions in the Internet business model\, has generated more tussles with appli
cation providers for network resources or with other Internet Service Provi
ders. As some of these tensions have been publicly disclosed\, many discuss
ions arose worldwide around the net neutrality — application provider askin
g regulation authorities to keep networks neutral and telco operator arguin
g the need for investment incentives. Beside\, applications' needs for QoS
guarantees become increasingly urgent\, especially in the field of real-tim
e interactive applications and for supporting security impediments.\n\nThe
ETICS Workshop will focus on both the economic and technical issues telco o
perators are facing to sustain the evolutions required for the Future Inter
net in order to accommodate new services. These issues can be addressed at
various network levels from the Control Plane (admission control\, MPLS\, e
tc.) to the service level (e.g. B/OSS).\n\nWe invite original\, previously
unpublished papers and research contributions in the area of economics and
technical solutions for the future Internet. The accepted papers will appea
r in the workshop proceedings\, published by Springer-Verlag\, in the Lectu
re Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.\n\nhttp://networking2012.cvut.c

DESCRIPTION:The Co-‐‑Production of Knowledge: Social Media\, STS and …\nTh
 ree-‐‑Day Symposium to be held at\nUniversity of York\, UK\nJuly 18-‐‑20
2012\n\nThe deadline for this call for papers is 29 February 2012. If you a
re interested to submit\nan individual paper or panel including 3 papers pl
ease go to web-‐‑link or contact email\nsatsu@york.ac.uk\n\nhttp://www.yor
k.ac.uk/satsu/news-events/ics/\n\nCall for Papers\nThe ubiquitous social an
d cultural adoption of social media\, such as Twitter\, Google\,\nWikipedia
\, YouTube and Facebook can be seen to present a significant example of sci
entific\nand technological innovation in many contemporary societies. While
some studies of\nsocial media and\, more specifically\, Web 2.0 platforms
built around user-‐‑generated\ncontent\, have made reference to the import
ance of the field of science and technology\nstudies (STS) for understandin
g their development and diffusion\, scholars working\nwithin this academic
framework have yet to fully turn their focus on this area. This\nthree-‐‑d
ay symposium is intended to explore the intersection between STS and social
\nmedia inquiry\, with a specific focus on how Web 2.0 is both generative a
nd challenging\nof different forms of knowledge (co-‐‑)production and the
authority it commands.\n• The user-‐‑centred and mass-‐‑collaboration cha
racteristics of social media platforms\nhave a clear affinity with recent S
TS models of the co-‐‑construction of\ntechnologies. Notions such as ‘pros
umerism’ have been used to describe this\nblurring of the relationship betw
een the consumer and producer. However\, we\nneed to ask whether this is to
be seen as co-‐‑construction or primarily a re-‐‑\nengineering of labour
relations and the locus of production? We also need to ask\nwhether the ub
iquity extends across all social media for all types of content. In\nother
words\, are new forms of expertise being inscribed\, or are old knowledge\n
hierarchies being reinforced?\n• STS challenges the traditional perception
of scientific ‘discovery’ and\ntechnological advancement\, to demonstrate t
he co-‐‑production of claims to\nknowledge and the different forms and ass
emblages of knowledge this involves:\nhow does this map onto commentaries o
n the importance of lay knowledge and\n‘citizen science’ found in Web 2.0 a
s individuals and groups distribute ideas and\ninformation across their soc
ial networks? Could this provide a new impetus for\n‘public interest scienc
e’?\n• How do the same issues relate to the social sciences themselves: how
might Web\n2.0 provide opportunities for new forms of data and data analyt
ics (for example\,\nas ‘virtual knowledge’ via crowdsourcing\, real-‐‑time
data streaming\, by-‐‑product\ndata etc) and in what ways do these challe
nge conventional social science by\nopening up questions about what data it
self constitutes and what order of being\nit represents?\n• How might lay\,
amateur knowledge be mobilised as ‘citizen science’ and what\nwarrant\, au
thorisation and location in established science might it secure? How\nmight
the contribution of Web 2.0 science platforms differ from the amateur\nsoc
ieties of the 19th and 20th centuries?\n• It has been claimed that algorith
ms and code play an increasingly powerful part\nin shaping and constituting
everyday life\, it has even been claimed that\nalgorithms are creating new
rules and power structures that unknowingly come\nto restructure social hi
erarchies and divisions. How\, for example\, do algorithms\nmake decisions
for us? How do algorithms bypass or re-‐‑craft human agency?\nWhat are the
implications of this? Exactly how do algorithms\, code and metrics\nshape
everyday life and access to knowledge?\n• Do the open source platforms and
social media tools of Web 2.0 come into\ntension with the international sta
ndardisation and codification of global ICT\ninfrastructures and local and
global knowledge infrastructures?\n• Finally\, the more celebratory charact
erisations of social media emanating from\nthe marketing world typically la
ck a critical focus: can social media and STS\nanalyses build a political e
conomy of Web 2.0 to provide such a focus\, by\nexplicitly addressing issue
s of participatory surveillance\, exclusion and control?\nPapers are invite
d that explore these broad questions around a number of possible\nthemes\,
including:\n• The boundaries and future of social media as a medium of know
 ledge creation\,\ndissemination\, and regulation\n• The co-‐‑production of
  knowledge via Web 2.0 platforms\n• Knowledge\, expertise and disruptive/di
srupted authority\n• Capturing social media: the commercial/political explo
itation by or empowering\nof Web 2.0\n• Ownership\, dissemination and use o
f scientific knowledge\n• E-‐‑governance and the regulation of knowledge w
ithin social media\n• National practices and global opportunities\n• Novel
forms of knowledge creation through group processes\, archiving\,\ndigitiza
tion etc.\n• Public and visible science\n• Scientific controversies online
