Google RISE Awards

FAQ

students involved in science and engineering

Can university student organizations apply for funding?

Yes, however you must have a Computer Science faculty or staff adviser participate in the application process and included as a contact. Please include contact information in your written proposal.

Does receiving an award one year guarantee funding for the following year?

No, you will be asked to submit a new application each year. In addition, we will take into consideration any post-program feedback shared with the Google RISE Awards Team. Previous RISE Award recipients are encouraged to apply but be advised that new programs will be given priority consideration. While there is currently no limit set on the number of RISE Awards a program/applicant can receive, this guideline will be reviewed on a yearly basis.

What are some examples of programs you would sponsor?

Examples of programs we would support include: A Computer Science camp for high-school girls organized by a university, or development of an after-school robotics program in an underprivileged neighborhood. We encourage submission of innovative new ideas.

Why do you ask for the names of Google employees who know about the proposal?

This is an additional data point that will be used in evaluating your proposal. It is for informational purposes only, and will not give one proposal an advantage over another.

Do you provide funding for programs outside of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) or Computer Science?

While we are supportive of enriching the general education of students, the focus of the RISE Awards program is to support STEM and Computer Science initiatives.

What is an "in-kind" donation?

A gift of goods, commodities or services that is given in place of money.

Is the program limited to applicants from the United States?

Yes, we are currently offering this program in the United States only, with the possibility of expanding internationally in subsequent years.

We are a K-12 science and technology school. Do we qualify for the Google RISE Awards?

K-12 schools (private, charter, public) are not eligible for the Google RISE Awards. Our focus at this time is on programs outside of the traditional classroom.

We are located 90 minutes from one of the Google locations listed on your website. Are we eligible?

Organizations in all US locations are eligible. However, special consideration will be given to programs that function in communities (U.S. only) in which Google has a presence.

Is the Google RISE Awards a grant program?

No, the Google RISE Awards is considered a gift. However, award recipients will be asked for feedback in the fall of the year that the award is granted. This information is useful for us to shape and develop the RISE Awards Program for future years.
