Google THREAD Overview

THRough Education and Active Dialogue (THREAD) is a group of Google employees who organize on-site English language and computer training classes for Google’s janitorial staff, who are largely Latino and Latina immigrant workers. THREAD’s goal is to use Google’s technological resources to empower our support staff and narrow the digital divide among employees at Google. THREAD is taking the unique approach of addressing the divide within a corporate setting instead of through a separate community organization. In addition to supporting and growing the program at Google, THREAD is seeking to network with like-minded technologists who want to establish similar programs at their respective companies.

THREAD holds weekly computer and English classes that aim to empower Google's support staff through:

• Shared access to computer labs and Google technology
• Pairing enthusiastic engineers with motivated students
• Basic tutorials in standard software and web applications
