During heart development, the endocardium provides a source of cells for the valves, the membranous portion of the ventricular septum, the endothelium of coronary vessels, and cardiac fibroblasts. It plays a key role in ventricular trabeculation, myocardial compaction, as well as valve and coronary vessel formation.
