The first thing I did when I began working on this doodle was watch a live recording of “La Flor De La Canela”. Two things were immediately clear to me: Chabuca’s commanding stage presence was as powerful as her voice, and that I must do my best to capture this personality in a portrait.
Though initial concepts featured Afro-Peruvian musicians that Chabuca was credited with bringing to the mainstream, I decided it was best to keep the composition as simple as possible.
