Google Maps

Google Maps is an intuitive service for navigating global maps information. It enables you and your students to look up and study addresses anywhere in the U.S. and in many other countries and get point-to-point, draggable directions plotted on an interactive street map. You can also research public transit options and study Yellow Pages listings with reviews, business information and coupons. You can freely switch between map, satellite, terrain, and StreetView modes to gain various perspectives on a location. Best of all, Google Maps is an online application, so there's no downloading required, and you can access it from any computer that's connected to the Internet.

Never used Google Maps before?
Be sure to check out the Getting Started Guide. While you might use Google Maps to get around outside the classroom, you might be surprised to see how easy it is to incorporate content-rich maps into your curriculum!

Google Maps' detailed, highly visual information can be incorporated into numerous lesson plans, from history to geography, social studies and even economics. Students can use Google Maps to learn about specific locations and see what they look like from an aerial view; compare their home streets and neighborhoods with those of distant penpals; and study satellite images superimposed on the maps.

Google Maps are now editable, so students can add or move your school, rec center, or favorite park to help other users find the most accurate information. With MyMaps, you and your students can create personalized, annotated, customized maps. Whether you're planning a field trip or documenting a famous traveler's journeys, you can embed photos, videos, and descriptive text to make the content come alive. You can also publish, share, and invite others to collaborate on your project. Learn more.

Here are some ideas for using Google Earth in your classroom:

  • Art History: Search for photos and user-created maps showing famous museums like the Louvre in Paris.
  • Climatology: Celebrate the 2007-2008 International Polar Year and add your classroom's plans to this global map.
  • Earth Science: Use this Google Maps Mashup to locate and learn about recent earthquakes around the world.
  • Environmental Science: See how Google and the United Nations Environment Programme teamed up to use collaborative MyMaps for the International Cleanup Weekend Initiative.
  • History: Take a virtual tour of the 21 California Missions.
  • Physics: Learn how one teacher used Google Maps with his 9th grade class to teach speed, velocity and displacement.

Teachers speak out

Online mapping technologies now play an integral part in my teaching toolkit. Google Maps has allowed many developers the access to a high quality mapping resource that has then spurned mashups or other applications. Quikmaps is a great tool taking advantage of Google Maps at its core – notes and placemarks can easily be dragged onto the map and even images and video footage can be inserted using simple html. These maps can then be saved and even embedded into a class wikispace. We have been exploring our local history and a key activity for my Year 6 children (10-11 year olds) will be to place historic photographs of our town on a modern map. This can be easily achieved through the use of Google Maps and Quikmaps.

The other key mapping tool is Google Earth – which I have used in a range of subjects. From writing diary entries for Dracula to calculating the area of a car park in Las Vegas it engages the children with the quality of the imagery and offers such a wealth of information. We even have been plotting the location of comments on our class blog ( http://priestsic6.learnerblogs.org)

Both Google Maps and Google Earth play important roles in helping me deliver high quality and engaging educational activities with my children.
