Welcome to 3D Basecamp

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the event?
SketchUp 3D Basecamp 2008 will take place Wednesday, June 11th through Friday, June 13th of 2008.

Where will the event be held?
It will be held at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Will there be a fee for people who attend the event?
There is no charge to attend Basecamp 2008, though attendees are responsible for their own travel, lodging and other expenses.

What will happen at 3D Basecamp 2008?
We're still working on the program for the event, but generally, it will include workshops, presentations and hands-on sessions for people who use Google SketchUp.

Who can attend the event?
To attend the event, you must be 18 years of age or older and receive an invitation from us. Please see the next question for more information about indicating that you would like to receive an invitation.

How do I register for the event?
From April 15th through the 22nd, you can use this form to add your name to the list of people who would like to join us in Mountain View. We'll randomly select up to 300 people to invite to the event from the requests we receive. Since space is limited and we expect interest to be high, we think this is the fairest way to decide who will be invited to attend.

How long will I have to request an invitation?
The list will be open for seven days, beginning on April 15th. It will close at 11:00 pm Pacific Time on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008.

When will I know if I've been invited to attend?
Everyone will receive an email from us on Friday, April 25th, 2008. The email you receive will either be an invitation to attend or a notification that you have been placed on a waiting list. Those who have been invited will receive a second email from us on Tuesday, May 6th, asking them to let us know if they DO NOT plan to attend. Starting on May 7th, any vacant spots will be offered to people on the waiting list. We expect that the last invitation will be extended on May 14th, 2008.

Here are the dates again, presented in an easier-to-read manner:

How many event invitations will be extended?
The precise number of invitations we extend will depend on the amount of space we have available, but we estimate the number to be between 250 and 300.

Should I make travel arrangements right now?
No. Please don't make any travel arrangements until you know if you have been extended an invitation. We'll make more travel details available to those who are invited.

Is the event for SketchUp beginners, or for more experienced SketchUp users?
We're doing our best to make sure the program is interesting and relevant to SketchUp people at all levels of SketchUp mastery.

Will the event be relevant to users of both Google SketchUp Pro and Google SketchUp (free)?
Yes.

Do I need to own a license for Google SketchUp Pro to attend the event?
No.

Who will be the presenters at the event?
The presenters at 3D Basecamp will be a mix of specially-invited expert SketchUp users and members of the Google SketchUp team.

Do I need to bring my own laptop computer to the event?
Most likely, yes. There will be lots of hands-on learning opportunities at Basecamp, and it's highly unlikely that we'll be able to provide computers for attendees.

Will you feed us during this event?
We'll provide a continental breakfast and lunch all three days, and dinner on the first (Wednesday) night. All meals will be served on the Google campus.

Will attendees have wireless internet access on campus?
Yes.

What's the dress code?
We'll probably be wearing jeans and t-shirts, but you're welcome to wear anything you like.

What should I bring with me?
Bring yourself, your SketchUp questions, models and problems and your laptop, if you have one.

Can I bring my family?
Unfortunately, we won't have space on campus for anyone but you. Feel free to bring your family to California, but note that they won't be able to attend the event.

Can I contact someone with questions about the event?
If you can't find the answers to your questions on this FAQ, then please feel free to send us an email at sketchupbasecamp@google.com. We'll do our best to get back to you as soon as we can.

Will you ever have an event like 3D Basecamp closer to where I live?
We're waiting to see how this 3D Basecamp goes; if all goes well, we would love to have events in different parts of the world. At this time, though, we have no other events planned.

Will session materials be available after the event for people who could not attend in person?
We'd love for this to happen, and we'll do everything we can to make sure that it does. When and if this material becomes available, we'll announce it in the SketchUpdate newsletter and on our blog.
