The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI) has a glowing reputation. The utility, commonly referred to as The Illuminating Company, distributes electricity to a base population of about 1.8 million inhabitants in a 1,600 sq. ml. area of northeastern Ohio. CEI has 33,210 miles of distribution lines. In 2010 the utility met 4,420 MW of hourly maximum generating demand from interests in fossil-fueled and nuclear power plants (which are operated by fellow FirstEnergy subsidiaries). It also engages in wholesale energy transactions with other power companies. CEI is also a competitive retail electric service provider in Ohio alongside sister companies Ohio Edison and Toledo Edison.
