Working to keep the lights on, the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) sets standards for the operation of the continent's power grid. The NERC monitors wholesale activities on the grid and provides assessment, training, tools, and services in coordination with regional councils to ensure reliability. It is a self-regulatory organization overseen by the USFederal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Canadian government. The NERC has worked with the FERC to establish legally enforceable reliability standards for the US bulk power system that took effect in 2007. The NERC was formed in 1968, three years after one of the largest blackouts in American history.
