RFE/RL Inc. is better known as Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, two radio networks that broadcast news and information in almost 30 languages to listeners in 20 Eastern European and Central Asian countries. With more than 400 full-time journalists, the not-for-profit organization strives to provide uncensored news in regions where state-controlled media is the dominant source of information. Radio Free Europe was established in 1950 to provide news to people in Eastern European countries under the control of the Soviet Union; Radio Liberty was launched three years later. Both operations were originally funded by the CIA. Today, RFE/RL is funded by the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
