Emerson College specializes in teaching subjects in the fields of communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Areas of study include journalism; marketing; organizational and political communication; performing arts; visual and media arts; and writing, literature, and publishing. Its also has an acclaimed communication sciences and disorders program. The college enrolls about 3,200 full-time undergraduates and 1,000 full and part-time graduate students on its Boston-based campus. Among its alumni are producer Norman Lear, talk show host Jay Leno, and journalist Morton Dean. The college has additional facilities in Los Angeles and in the Netherlands. Emerson was founded in 1880 as a school of oratory.
