Specialized Bicycle Components didn't set out to make a museum piece, but its original StumpJumper (the first mass-produced mountain bike) is now permanently parked inside the Smithsonian Institution. Its 1981 debut established Specialized as a top-seller in bike shops alongside products from Trek and Giant for high-end cycles. Founded in 1974, the firm also makes road bikes, hybrid bikes, BMX bikes, and children's bikes. Specialized offers branded apparel and shoes, bags, eyewear, helmets, and bike parts and accessories (such as crank sets, saddles, and tires). It peddles merchandise through its website. Cycling enthusiast and founder Mike Sinyard owns a majority stake with Merida holding a minority share.
