IO is ground zero for US multilateral diplomacy. The Bureau of International Organization Affairs, or IO, forms and implements American policy at the UN and other international groups. It sends ambassadors and delegates to these groups and advances American interests in the international community. IO works to ensure peace, democracy, human rights, and security through offices in Geneva, Rome, and Vienna as well as in Washington, DC. It also promotes sustainable economic growth, fair trade, health, humanitarian aid, and environmental protection worldwide. The bureau is part of the State Department.
