SpaceDev intends to go where few have profited before. The company wants to reduce the cost of doing business in space by using off-the-shelf hardware and software to build cheaper, smaller spacecraft and subsystems. SpaceDev is developing the Dream Chaser passenger and cargo carrier that will use conventional runways to launch into orbital and sub-orbital flights, including flights to the International Space Station. Other products include small satellites and related launch services, propulsion components, and rocket motors. Customers include Boeing, NASA, Lockheed Martin, and the Missile Defense Agency. In 2008 Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) bought SpaceDev for around $38 million.
