Hartz has mountains of products for pets! The company makes 1,500-plus pet care products, including nutritional supplements for birds and fish; over-the-counter animal healthcare items; and toys and training aids for dogs and cats. It also caters to ferrets, hamsters, and rabbits. Products are sold through some 40,000 retailers in the US and Canada, and online. (The US is the world's largest market for pet products.) Founded by German immigrant Max Stern in 1926, Hartz Mountain is 51%-owned by Japanese household and pet goods maker Unicharm, which acquired its majority stake from trading giant Sumitomo in fall 2011.
