National HealthCare Corporation (NHC) is engaged in the operation of long-term health care centers with associated assisted living and independent living centers. The Company�s business activities include providing subacute skilled and intermediate nursing and rehabilitative care, senior living services, home health care services and hospice services. In addition, it provides management services, accounting and financial services and insurance services to third party owners of health care facilities. It operates in 11 states, and its owned and leased properties are located primarily in the southeastern United States. These numbers include 54 centers with 7,294 beds that it leases or owns and 21 centers with 2,162 beds that it manages for others. As of January 1, 2012, it held a total of 67.1% of non-controlling ownership interest in Caris HealthCare, LP. In December 2012, the Company purchased six health care centers from National Health Investors Inc (NHI).
