Nyrstar Clarksville operates an electrolytic zinc smelter in Clarksville, Tennessee, that produces more than 100,000 tons of zinc metal annually. The Clarksville facility is the only US operation of European smelting giant Nyrstar. The facility and other key mining and smelting assets were acquired by Australian minerals company Zinifex from Pasminco, which had run into financial trouble, in 2004. The Clarksville smelter, which is accessible by barge, rail, and road, was commissioned in 1978. Zinifex combined its zinc and lead smelting and alloying operations with those of Umicore in 2006 and spun the unit off as Nyrstar in 2007.
