It's no sin to be interested in crude material. Syncrude Canada is the world's largest producer of light sweet crude oil from oil sands, and operates the Syncrude Project, a large oil sands mine that produces value-added light, sweet crude oil. Located in the Athabasca Oil Sands, the Project is the #1 single source of oil in Canada, producing 350,000 barrels per day. The Syncrude Project is a joint venture operated by Syncrude Canada and owned by a group of oil and gas entities, including Imperial Oil and Suncor Energy. In 2010 ConocoPhillips sold its 9% stake in Syncrude to Sinopec for $4.7 billion to reduce debt. Suncor Energy was seeking to acquire a majority stake in Syncrude in 2016. Massive wildfires in 2016 forced the company to shut down its production operations temporarily.
