About 370 out of every 100,000 Montanans are jailed annually, and the Montana Department of Corrections is charged with their care and rehabilitation. The agency runs the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge, which holds some 1,300 male offenders, and the Montana Women's Prison in Billings, which houses about 265 female prisoners. Also part of the system are the state's regional prisons and the Crossroads Correctional Center. The department supervises more than 12,000 offenders, about four-fifths of whom are in programs other than prison, such as a prerelease centers, treatment programs, probation, or parole. The agency's annual budget is about $170 million.
