Screaming ice cream lovers can soothe their pipes at Friendly's. Friendly Ice Cream operates a chain of some 380 family-style restaurants in 15 states that specialize in frozen dairy treats. In addition to ice cream, the restaurants serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- mostly traditional American fare such as sandwiches and burgers. More than half of the chain's locations are franchised. Friendly's also distributes ice cream and other frozen desserts through supermarkets and other retail sites. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late 2011 and emerged early in 2012 after closing about 20% of its locations.
