International Launch Services (ILS) is where East meets West in the space race. While Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center (the company's majority owner since 2008) is based in Russia, ILS is registered in the US. Using Russia's workhorse launch vehicle -- the Proton -- ILS provides launch services primarily to the commercial satellite industry; it also launches payloads for the Russian government. ILS launches its space vehicles from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (operated by the Russian Space Agency) in Kazakhstan. Since its creation in 1995 as a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and its current Russian owner, ILS has participated in more than 350 launches.
