Shhh! The Hillman Company is making money. Founded in 1951, the publicity-shy venture capital and investment firm quietly has holdings primarily in real estate, as well as in medical technology, information technology, and other high-tech enterprises. It was an early backer of investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR). Billionaire philanthropist Henry Hillman (who once told FORTUNE magazine that "a whale is harpooned only when it spouts" when asked why he eschews interviews) stepped down as chairman of The Hillman Company in 2004, but continues to steer the firm's executive committee and charitable activities.
