The Louisiana Department of Corrections holds some 38,000 inmates in correctional facilities around the state, including the 127-year-old Louisiana State Penitentiary. Due to capacity limitations only half of the offenders reside in the state's 13 prisons. The remainder are assigned to parish facilities or work release programs. Another 63,000 offenders are on probation or parole. Corrections Organized for Re-entry (CORe) provides programs in and out of prison, such as GED classes and job fairs, to help prevent recidivism. The Prison Enterprises division offers a variety of inmate-made products for sale such as furniture and cleaning products. The department has an annual budget of more than $520 million.
