The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) likes to think of itself as the voice of science. Founded in 1848, AAAS is a nonprofit that promotes scientific research and technology through educational and international programs, policy support, and the publication of books, newsletters, and weekly magazine Science (available to AAAS members and institutional subscribers). It also runs science news Web site EurekAlert! The association serves more than 260 affiliated societies and academies of science, reaching some 10 million individuals. AAAS has advised policymakers on such topics as global climate change and stem cell research and has rallied for more US research and development funding.
