The University of Utah (U of U) has offered instruction since long before the Beehive State was a state. Founded in 1850 as the University of Deseret, the "U of U" has a total enrollment of some 32,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with a student-to-faculty ratio of some 14:1. It offers more than 70 undergraduate majors and some 90 graduate-level fields of study at about 20 colleges and schools; its business, science, humanities, and engineering departments are the university's largest. It also offers medical, nursing, and pharmacy programs, as well as health and social science research programs. U of U confers some 7,000 baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees annually.
