Known as the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the nation, with a population of more than 1.5 million. The city, which covers 135 square miles, operates through some 50 departments, boards, offices, and other units that include emergency medical services, sanitation services, and street maintenance. Founded in 1682 by William Penn, Philadelphia has a mayor, 10 districts and 17 council members. The city, which hosts millions of tourists each year, is home to the Phillies, the Eagles, the Flyers, the 76ers, Bryn Mawr College, the Liberty Bell, and the National Constitution Center. The City of Philadelphia has an annual budget of more than $3.5 billion.
