Description

Cortex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Cortex) focuses on developing small molecule compounds that positively modulate AMPA-type glutamate receptors, a complex of proteins involved in the communication between nerve cells in the mammalian brain. These compounds, termed AMPAKINE compounds, enhance the activity of the AMPA receptor. The Company designs and develops these molecules as pharmaceuticals intended for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases, and disorders that are known, or thought, to involve depressed functioning of pathways in the brain that use glutamate as a neurotransmitter. The Company’s clinical compound, CX717 is in Phase II clinical development. Diseases, such as alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, depression, respiratory depression caused by opiate analgesics, and possibly sleep apnea may benefit from treatment with AMPAKINE drugs.
