Birmingham-Southern College is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The school offers bachelor's degrees in more than 50 fields of study, including art history, math, physics, and religion. It has an enrollment of approximately 1,300 students. In addition to core curriculum in areas of arts, fine arts, music, and science, the college has study abroad, independent study, research, honors, interdisciplinary study, and internship programs. Birmingham-Southern College is the result of the 1918 merger between Southern University (founded in 1856) and Birmingham College (founded in 1898).
