Albuquerque is by far New Mexico's largest city, with a 2015 estimated population of 561,380 (about 970,680 in the greater metropolitan area). Albuquerque is located in the central part of the state and is home to The University of New Mexico. While Pueblo Indians lived in the general area for several centuries, Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century. The city of Albuquerque was founded in 1706 and named after the Spanish town of Alburquerque (with an extra "r"). The City of Albuquerque is administered by a Mayor and a nine-person City Council.
