Countrywide Home Loans is a unit of residential lender Countrywide Financial's mortgage banking segment. It originates and invests in correspondent, consumer, and wholesale mortgage loans. Additionally, Countrywide offers a variety of loan servicing and loan closing services such as appraisals and flood determination. Countrywide Home Loans was historically the flagship mortgage origination subsidiary of its parent, but Countrywide Financial over the years has transferred virtually all loan production responsibilities to Countrywide Bank. Hit hard by the credit crisis, Countrywide Financial was acquired by Bank of America in 2008, and will be renamed Bank of America Home Loans in April 2009.
