With a population of more than 220,000, the City of Irving covers approximately 68 square miles. It contains Las Colinas, a developed area founded in 1972 by cattle ranching millionaire Ben H. Carpenter. Las Colinas is known for its landmark office towers, luxury hotels, private country clubs, and gated residencies. Irving's city government consists of its mayor, eight council members (serving three-year terms), and a city manager.
