Defenders of Wildlife goes on the offensive for animals. The group is a national not-for-profit membership organization devoted to the preservation and protection of native wild animals and plants. In addition to species and habitat preservation, Defenders lobbies Congress for sound environmental policy development and has specific conservation programs for Alaska, California, Canada, and international locations. It also publishes Defenders, a quarterly magazine for members; an annual report on endangered lands; and state wildlife viewing guides. Founded in 1947 as Defenders of Furbearers, the group later changed its name and today boasts some 1 million members and other supporters worldwide.
