Nicor Inc. (Nicor) is a holding company. The Company’s primary business is gas distribution. The Company’s subsidiaries include Nicor Gas, a distributor of natural gas, and Tropical Shipping, a transporter of containerized freight in the Bahamas and the Caribbean region. Nicor also owns several energy-related ventures, including Nicor Services, Nicor Solutions and Nicor Advanced Energy, which provide energy-related products and services to retail markets, and Nicor Enerchange, a wholesale natural gas marketing company. Nicor operates in two segments: gas distribution and shipping. The gas distribution segment is Nicor’s principal business. The shipping segment transports containerized freight between Florida, the eastern coast of Canada, the Bahamas and the Caribbean region. The shipping segment also includes amounts related to cargo insurance coverage sold to its customers and other third parties.
