Illovo Sugar Limited is a global, sugar producer and a manufacturer of downstream products. Downstream products include furfural (used in lube oil refineries for the purification of oils), furfuryl alcohol (used mainly to produce a resin in the foundry industry as a binder for foundry sands), Agriguard (an agricultural nematicide), diacetyl and 2.3-pentanedione (both used as natural flavourants), biomass sugar, ethyl alcohol and lactulose. The Company operates in three segments: cane growing, which is engaged in the processing of sugar cane for use in the sugar production process; sugar production, which is engaged in the manufacture of sugar from cane, and downstream operations, which is engaged in the manufacture and sale of downstream products including syrup, furfural and alcohol. The Company has operations in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland, Tanzania and Mozambique. Its share of industry production in South Africa is 41%, Swaziland 33%, Tanzania 42% and Mozambique 31%.
