Made-to-order hamburgers are in and franchising is out at In-N-Out Burger. The company owns and operates nearly 300 popular burger joints located primarily in California and a handful of other western states. The chain's menu features just four basic items -- hamburgers, cheeseburgers, the Double-Double (two patties and two slices of cheese), and french fries -- but patrons are free to customize how their hamburger is prepared. The chain famously does not use microwaves, heat lamps, or freezers, and it has no franchise operators. Harry and Esther Snyder started the family-owned company in 1948.
