Annuals are an everyday business for Knox Nursery. Founded in 1962, the company grows 13,000 varieties of flowering annuals for a variety of customers, including landscapers and home improvement chain stores, nationwide. For the production of seedling annuals, which account for most of the company's sales, Knox Nursery spent about $6 million to build a growing facility that uses automation to cut labor costs, about in half. It operates its business on more than 20 acres in Florida. The company's major customers have included Ball Seed, Walt Disney World, and DPT Brokerage. The Knox family took the company private in mid-2005, citing the high cost of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
