Meruelo Maddux Properties, Inc. (Meruelo Maddux) is a self-managed, full-service real estate company that develops, redevelops and owns commercial and residential properties located in downtown Los Angeles and other densely populated urban areas in California. As of December 31, 2008, the Company owns 28 rental projects and 19 projects held for real estate development (one of which was subject to a lease with rights to purchase and this option was terminated subsequent to the year ended December 31, 2008). Most of its projects are located in or around the downtown area of Los Angeles, and all of its projects are in Southern California. In March 2009, the Company and numerous of its subsidiaries have filed for voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in California.
