Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of its own drugs based on prostones, a class of compounds derived from functional fatty acids that occur naturally in the human body. The Company conducts its business through its subsidiaries based in the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan. The Company is focused on developing prostone-based compounds for the treatment of gastrointestinal, vascular, respiratory, and central nervous system diseases and disorders for which there are unmet or underserved medical needs. The Company has received marketing approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for its first product AMITIZA (lubiprostone), for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation in adults. In April 2008, it received a second marketing approval from the FDA for Amitiza for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation in adult women.
