The New York State Division of Human Rights works to make sure everyone is treated fairly and equally in terms of employment, public accommodation (restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and other public places), housing, education, and credit. It investigates complaints, develops human rights laws and policy, and seeks to promote human rights awareness, and combats discrimination against anyone based on age, color, creed, marital status, military status, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, or race. New York enacted the first state anti-discrimination law in 1945 and formed the Division of Human Rights in 1968.
