Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC (BNSF) is a holding company. Through its subsidiaries, BNSF is engaged primarily in the freight rail transportation business. BNSF Railway Company�s (BNSF Railway) rail operations consist, which is the principal operating subsidiary, of the railroad systems in North America. BNSF Railway transports a range of products and commodities, including the transportation of consumer products, coal, industrial products and agricultural products, derived from manufacturing, agricultural and natural resource industries. As of December 31, 2012, BNSF Railway operated railroad networks in North America with approximately 32,500 route miles of track, excluding multiple main tracks, yard tracks and sidings in 28 states, approximately 23,000 miles of which are owned route miles, including easements, in 28 states and two Canadian provinces.
