St. John Hospital & Medical Center is part of the larger Detroit area-based St. John Health regional health care system. Besides providing acute and trauma care, the 770-bed teaching hospital operates specialized cancer and pediatric centers, a hip and knee center, an inpatient mental health unit, and a Parkinson's Disease clinic. It also operates the only emergency trauma center on Detroit's East Side. The hospital was established in 1952 and has grown to include a 200-physician medical team that specializes in more than 50 medical and surgical fields. It boasts 34,000 admissions; 14,500 surgical visits; and more than 126,500 emergency center visits each year.
